Spice Girls to Savvy Mamas- BornFree review

Three fifths of the Spice Girls are happily awaiting the arrival of the newest additions to their families!  Melanie Brown just announced she is expecting again in addition to Victoria Beckham and Emma Bunton,

The Beckham’s are expecting their fourth child, a girl! While Emma Bunton and hubby Jade Jones are expecting their second.  Mel B. was the latest addition to the baby on board club.  Motherhood is nothing new to this healthful and savvy mama, who already knows the benefits of BPA free products, like Born Free baby bottles.

About Born Free
BornFree™ has developed a range of products baby bottles, cups and accessories that is totally free of the potentially dangerous chemicals Bisphenol-A (BPA), Phthalates and PVC. BPA is a known estrogen mimicker that is used in the production of polycarbonate plastic. According to researchers, BPA may cause developmental and neurological problems if it leaches from plastic. Reports suggest that small amounts of BPA may leach into food or beverages stored in polycarbonate containers, especially when the contents are heated. In addition, BornFree™'s cups and bottles feature the unique BornFree™ venting system, designed to reduce colic and ear infections.

My review: I opted to review the Twist' nPop because L (3) likes to drop his cup wherever he finishes it and I worry about stains on the carpets and sticky spots on the wood floors.  This cup is great because it is easy to close and has a straw to drink out of, which helps kids learn how to drink from straws, which is much more common than sippy cups when they go out into the big kid world.  My son loves this cup and specifically asks for it when he gets something to drink.  I can microwave it with no problems as well.  Here's what the company says about the cup:

The Twist’nPop™ spill proof straw cup, for ages 2+, incorporates a hygienic pop up silicone straw and venting mechanism for comfortable drinking.

Veggie Tales: 'Twas the Night Before Easter DVD Review

I apologize for the tardiness of this review- I should have had it done before Easter, but clearing out my inbox is like wading through sewage to find a glass marble.  I don't know what that analogy even means, but just get that I have a full inbox.

So, if you're unfamiliar with Veggie Tales, you're missing out!  Veggie Tales feature Bob the Tomato and his good pal Larry the Cucumber.  They have a slew of other vegetable friends (and some fruits) that help them tell their stories.  All their stories have a religious overtone, but it is not being shoved down your throat and it helps teach kids great morals!

This brand new DVD features plenty of fun music as well as a new character—Cassie Cassava—voiced by American Idol top finalist Melinda Doolittle. Other memorable family-friendly content includes silly songs, interviews and a backstage pass feature with Larry the Cucumber on the “VeggieTales Live!” tour. ‘Twas The Night Before Easter examines how important it is to help other people while exploring the real meaning of Easter.

My kids love watching Veggie Tales and as a parent, I love that it teaches them many good qualities and traits about life without being disgusting or obnoxious like a lot of the current cartoons are.
Family Time Factor:  Personally, I think it can be enjoyed by all ages, but I'm biased.

Dani's Story: A Journey from Neglect to Love by Diane & Bernie Lierow and Kay West (book review)

***Mother's Day Gift Idea (pre-order)***

Dani's Story: A Journey from Neglect to Love
Not since "A Child Called It" have I enjoyed/hated reading a story more.  Although the difference is that I have had children since, so the maternal instincts in me wept for this girl.  (Okay, so I don't have maternal instincts, but you get my point.)

Dani's story is about a young girl who was living in deplorable conditions when she was taken away from the situation.  She seemed to be so damaged and neglected that people thought there was no hope of rescuing her from a doomed existence and future.  This book is the story told by the couple that eventually adopted Danielle (which in itself was a daunting task of wrestling with a legal system that seemed completely in the wrong) and transformed her for the better.  With their love and support, Dani was able to overcome great hardships and lead a life that she never thought she could have or even deserve.

I thought this was a very moving book.  I was disgusted at the idea that parents would treat their own children like this, angry at the legal system that couldn't see what was right for this girl and joyous that there are good people out there that aren't selfish and can see that sometimes the littlest things can change someone's life for the better.

Definitely worth the read, you won't want to puty it down!!!

Wildly eccentric Joon (Masterson) can be very charming — especially when she takes her medicine. Long under the thumb of her overprotective brother, Benny (Quinn), Joon craves her independence. During an unusual poker game, Joon loses her hand — but wins Sam (Depp), a whimsical misfit who soon charms his way into her heart. Now if they can only find a romantic interest for her brother, love just might stand a chance in this charming, delightful film that also features Oliver Platt (Frost /Nixon) and Academy Award® Nominee Julianne Moore.

With stunning new video and audio quality, each of these titles has new and exciting things that add to the reason for owning them on blu-ray instead of DVD.  Many include special features as well, although those are offered in standard definition.

Family Time Factor:  For this blog, I reviewed Benny & Joon and Mystic Pizza.  Both are fairly mild in terms of graphicness and profanity, but both contain sexual references or acts, so I would not recommend them for 12 or under.  Great date night movies or movies for a girls night with friends!!  (Johnny Depp is hot no matter how weird they make him!!)  And it's fun to see Julia Roberts before she was leading lady accredited.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers: Season One DVD Review

So I had never heard of this show before and simply thought it was a new thing that was geared toward the green movement that everyone is pushing for.  After receiving the set and reading about it, I realized that it was actually from the 90s.  I'm not surprised that I didn't know about it because I was the lowest on the TV remote totem pole, so I was lucky to catch Garfield & Friends in the morning before I was beaten up and had the remote taken away.  Anyway, I was thinking this might be something that my kids would enjoy, but alas, they were not so thrilled about it.

I thought it was cute, albeit cheesy, but would I get excited at the thought of seeing it ever again?  Not so much.  I definitely think it's great for nostalgia purposes for those who've seen it, and although the video quality is not that of the cartoons now that kids want and are accustomed to, I'm sure there would be some children who would enjoy watching this.  And it's not just geared towards one gender, which is a plus.

"Move over Iron Man, Spider-Man and Batman, the world’s first environmentally-conscious superhero on the block plans to offer kids action-packed adventure and a chance to help save the environment. He's Captain Planet, the ever-changing eco-hero from within our Earth, who, with the help of five young people from around the globe called Planeteers, fights a never-ending battle against eco-villains out to destroy the world.  Arriving just in time for this year’s Earth Day celebration, Shout! Factory, in association with Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), will unleash the long-awaited Captain Planet and the Planeteers: Season One DVD set.

Offering rich animation and engaging storytelling, season one of Captain Planet and the Planeteers is sparkled with all-star voice cast comprise of some of the biggest names in Hollywood and video games, including David Coburn (Captain Planet), James Coburn (Looten Plunder), LeVar Burton (Kwame), Joey Dedio (Wheeler), Whoopi Goldberg (Gaia), Janice Kawaye (Gi), Scott Menville (Mai-Ti), Frank Welker (Suchi), Meg Ryan (Dr. Blight), Martin Sheen (Sly Sludge), Kath Soucie (Linka), Dean Stockwell (Duke Nukem), Jeff Goldblum (Verminous Skum), Sting (Zarm), among others.  Featuring all 26 action-packed episodes and a wealth of bonus content, this collectible 4-DVD box set boasts a specially designed eco-friendly packaging made of 100% recycled paper."

Easter Blues

First and foremost, my apologies on inundating everyone with reviews and no original posts- gotta pay the bills, and since there are so many, sometimes I get buried in them and have a hard time surfacing enough to think of worthwhile things to say- not that anything I say is necessarily worthwhile, but I like to ramble from time to time...

So today is Easter- go Jesus!  As a big fan of God, I do acknowledge this holiday.  And this year I have a huge case of the blues.  I'm going to chalk it up to 30% adjusting to my new bipolar meds and 70% not being around family for the first Easter in my existence.  Normally I spend every Easter with my parents and since becoming a mom, I have never spent an Easter away from my kids.  Well, this year I am not around either and it is lighting the edges of my heart on fire and slowly smoldering itself into the middle.

Without getting into negativity and drama, I found myself "unable" to go back to my hometown for the holidays.  I would have only spent a couple hours with my kids anyway while they did an Easter egg hunt, so it hardly made up for the sheer velocity of retribution I would have had to deal with by going back.  So, I told my daughter that I would stay home and make sure I was here to get whatever the Easter bunny left in case he left it outside the door.  She seemed quite okay with this idea and was not disappointed that I wasn't going back with her.  My son is too young to understand the concept of it being a holiday, he just knows that he gets presents... and don't even get me started on where the french fries this whole Easter bunny thing came from when we celebrate the holiday because Jesus rose... did he see a bunny and dub it the deliverer of candy and trinkets?  I don't recall seeing that in the Bible, but maybe I was skimming.

So what am I going to do on this Easter?  Well, I'm going to try to dig myself out of this hole of despair and emotional turmoil and try to enjoy spending the day with the boyfriend.  I know that I should try to make it special for him because he did not get to see his family either, but my selfish tendencies come in and I find it hard to muster a facade of excitedness.  I did start a crockpot full of loaded baked potato soup for dinner and I guess it's an Easter food because it has bacon and bacon comes from a pig and so does ham.

Okay, I'm going to wallow in self pity now.  Enjoy the day, whichever way you choose to do so!!!

Goodnight for Justice

I would definitely not say that I am a fan of westerns, but there are a couple that I was willing to try that didn't make me shudder in revulsion, i.e. Tombstone and Silverado.  Well, this one was oooookay, but not spectacular.  I thought the plot was interesting, but tired.  The whole vengeance for my slaughtered family thing has been done, but not so much as a western.  I think for a Hallmark movie, it was what it was and it was decent.  It is definitely worth a rainy day watch.  Luke Perry is pretty cute, after all!

Luke Perry and Jason Priestley last worked together on the legendary 90's teen soap "Beverly Hills, 90210," but in GOODNIGHT FOR JUSTICE, an acclaimed Western which premiered on the Hallmark Channel in January 2011 they reunite for the very first time with Priestley behind the camera and Perry in the lead.

John Goodnight (Perry) has a crystal clear memory of the day that his family fell victim to ruthless outlaws. He and the wife of Circuit Judge Aldous Shaw were the only survivors of the attack; she would become his foster mother.  Goodnight cannot forget the corrupt man who destroyed his family and he lives for a second chance encounter with the outlaw.  Years later, after he’s named a circuit judge of the Western Territories, Goodnight must choose between justice and revenge when the same outlaws return to terrorize his lands.

CAST/CREW
  • Luke Perry (“Beverly Hills, 90210”, Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  • Lara Gilchrist (“Battlestar Galactica”, The Seamstress)
  • Melanie Papalia (Postal, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love)
  • Michael Teigen (TRON: Legacy, Nightwatching)
  • Director Jason Priestley (Tombstone, “Beverly Hills 90210”)

BONUS FEATURES
·         New filmed interview with Luke Perry and Jason Priestley
Family Time Factor:  It's appropriate for most ages, but would probably be more enjoyed from ages 10 and up if you're going to watch it as a family.

Now through June 15th, parents are invited to share messy first birthday moments for a chance to win a dream birthday party for their child.

Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure Blu-Ray Review

My daughter has recently gotten to the point where she enjoys watching non-cartoon movies and tv shows.  This has become a great source of enjoyment for me because I get to live my kid-like joy vicariously through her.  And catty girls, pink, glittery glam and hair flipping actually secretly makes me giddy.  So, watching Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure was as fun for me as it was for my daughter!  It wasn't the most intelligent or witty movie I've ever seen, but if you take it at face value, it's just cute and fun.

"After a talent scout spots her performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, Sharpay Evans (Tisdale) sets off for the bright lights of NYC, convinced instant fame and fortune are in the bag (designer bag, that is). But theatre’s a dog-eat-dog world, as she and Boi discover when they encounter the devious owner of a pampered pooch named “Countess” and a scheming Broadway starlet who will do anything to crush the competition.

Fortunately, Sharpay also meets Peyton (Austin Butler), a handsome student filmmaker who finds Sharpay nearly as fascinating as she finds herself.  Sparkling with fun, fashion and fantastic bonus features, Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure will make your whole family stand up and cheer!”

Bonus Features:
  • BLOOPERS (on Blu-ray & DVD) – Ashley Tisdale and the cast cut up on set.
  • AUSTIN CAM (on Blu-ray & DVD) – Actor Austin Butler, who plays student filmmaker Petyon, not only shoots scenes needed for the movie, but takes his camera behind the scenes to see how Ashley Tisdale has fun between takes.
  • THE EVOLUTION OF SHARPAY (on Blu-ray only) – Ashley Tisdale traces the development of her bigger-than-life character from the High School Musical movies through her current movie.
Family Time Factor: Mostly a girl's movie, I'd say it would be enjoyed most by girls (and occasional moms) ages 4-14.

Being a mom doesn't mean you're a robot, a Stepford Wife or a mindless zombie who eats, sleeps and breathes diapers, laundry, cooking, cleaning and going to bed at 8pm.  (Okay, so I go to bed by 10pm most nights, but leave me alone!)  With that in mind, I bring you a nice reprieve from monotony.

Reconnected Kids by Dr. Robert Melillo (book review)

Reconnected Kids: Help Your Child Achieve Physical, Mental and Emotional Balance is a new book written by Dr. Robert Melillo, creator and cofounder of Brain Balance Centers.  It is a guide that helps parents to understand the mental, physical and emotional states that their children are at or should be at or nearing for their age.  The goal of the book is to help parents understand and be able to help the child change unwanted or negative issues without the use of medication, anger or drama.

I found a lot of the information in the book to be very accurate, although I would not say that the book is written to the average reader.  I can easily see this book being made into a workshop and EXPLAINED to parents.  The average parent these days seems to be blue collar and without a high degree of education, especially not one of psychology.

My favorite section of the book was the chapter entitled "Behavior."  In this chapter, the author broke down behavior/emotional traits, physical traits and cognitive traits by age.  My daughter is 5, however I did not recognize many of the traits as being characteristic of her now.  She turned five in December.  So, I read the traits for a six year old and most of them were spot on!  For my three year old son, most things were accurate, but several were way off.  Of course, every child is different and special, so I'd assume they don't all fit into cookie cutter molds!

There was one section of the book that I think is very important to emphasize:

"Read, Read, Read!  The primary predictor of a child's reading ability and success in school is mostly related to one single factor: the amount of books found in the home!

As a parent, the best thing you can do to raise children with healthy brains is to encourage reading in your household.  Read books to them and with them and encourage them to read on their own.  Lead by example:  Pick up a book and let your kids see you reading.  If you never read a book, chances are your child won't either."

If you have questions about why your child acts the way they do, or if you are curious about how to help change certain behaviors, I'd definitely recommend this book.  If your child has extreme issues and you are at your wit's end, I suggest a professional.  This is not an answer to your prayers.

Rocket Town by Bob Logan (children's book review)

Rocket TownBob Logan is a genius illustrator who has previously contributed his talent as a story artist on such features as Madagascar, Open Season and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  He has also lent his brilliance to a first book, the picture book, The Sea of Bath.

In Rocket Town, Logan uses gorgeous, full page illustrations to tell a simple tale of a man who decides to take a rocket trip with his dog.  The words are simple and give basic opposites in small sentences.  There is not much story to this board book, but children could spend HOURS pouring over the pictures.  They are highly detailed, creative and illicit great imagination in your kids.  My son is 3 and LOVED it.  My daughter is 5 and liked the pictures, but was not that interested in it otherwise.

This would make an excellent addition to your child's Easter basket!  (Or reward them for good behavior!)

MOTR Grade: A (but only for ages 3 and under.  I don't think it will excite older kids that much.)

Do you have a killer body?  (Must be nice.)  Do you love to show it off?  (You go, girl!)  Well, the people who bring you the coolest Hawaiian shirts on the planet are also the proud makers of the coolest Hawaiian sarongs in the GALAXY!!!  Look completely chic, while covering up this summer!

I chose a gorgeous Hand Painted Sarong because the color was stunning and I absolutely love anything with butterflies on it!  They have many other patterns and fabrics as well.

the first years Ignite Stroller Review

Nothing is better on a beautiful spring day than taking a walk and enjoying the beauty of nature.  And nothing disrupts that joy like chasing a toddler down the sidewalks, all over people's lawns and keeping them from running into the streets.  That or lugging around a 15 lb. baby... I used to use the cheap umbrella strollers, but I can tell you it was getting pretty frustating messing with broken wheels, wheels that got stuck, flimsy cloth, nowhere to put things, etc.

When I was introduced to Ignite from the first years, I was amazed at how fluidly it moved!  My son loved being pushed in it so much that he didn't want to get out!  And it passed the test of proving it was something he could fall asleep in.

Some of the product features include:
  • Durable frame rated for use to 50 pounds
  • Taller handles and multi position recline
  • 5 point harness for a safer ride
  • Large parent console and lower storage basket
  • Easy one hand fold and weighs only 14 pounds
One of my favorite parts is that it had a couple holder and a little pouch I could store snacks in!  For the easy  of use, assembly and my son's approval, I definitely will save this stroller to use for the next couple kids I have!

Look at how easily it maneuvers when being pushed around a busy kitchen area!!
